Doctor Strange 2: Multiverse of Madness director quits Marvel sequel

Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strangehas quit as director of the forthcoming sequel.

Both Marvel and Derrickson announced the news in a statement that blamed "creative differences" for the development.

Derrickson, who steered the 2016 original to $677.7m (£518m) at the global box office, will stay on as an executive producer.

“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences,” Marvel told Variety. “We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

Derrickson later added that the decision was "mutual".

The new film will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, who will reprise the role of Scarlet Witch. Find more details about the studio's Phase Four here.

There is currently no word on who will replace Derrickson when the film begins production in May.

Next on Marvel's agenda is Black Widow, which will be released on 1 May
