Doctor shares important vitamin supplement people should take during pandemic

A doctor has said people should be taking a vitamin D supplement while the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Dr Chris Steele appeared on This Morning to talk about the health benefits of the so called "sunshine vitamin" and the benefits it may have against the deadly virus.

The doctor stressed vitamin D is not a cure and taking it cannot stop you contracting the virus, but he cited research which states there is a "clear link" between vitamin D deficiencies and the severity of coronavirus endured.

Research also suggests ethnic minorities and the obese may be more at risk from coronavirus due to a lack of vitamin D.

Dr Chris Steele added the vitamin is "extremely important" for our bodies as it regulates the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body.

These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

Vitamin D can be obtained through eating oily fish like sardines, mackerel and tuna. It is also found in fortified foods like some cereals and yoghurts.

The skin absorbs vitamin D from the sun though it is still important to take care in the sun to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Dr Chris said he takes a supplement every day.
