Doctor says you shouldn't drink coffee first thing in the morning

A doctor famed for sharing health tips on social media has said you shouldn't drink coffee first thing in the morning.

Talking to BBC Morning Live, Dr Karan Raj, says you should wait until later in the day to have your first caffeine hit.

Dr Raj said: "Don't drink coffee first thing in the morning to wake you up.

"Your body naturally wakes you up with cortisol, you get a cortisol spike in the morning."

Dr Raj added: "Save your coffee until mid-morning when your cortisol levels and your energy levels dip so you get a caffeine boost then and it'll be better".

Social media users were divided - saying they need coffee in the morning to wake up and asking if they could have one later - and one first thing.

Others said they had tried the tip and were already feeling better.
