Doctor says new and popular chicken cooking trend is highly dangerous

A TikTok trend that sees people cooking chicken in cough medicine, and after going viral has raised alarm bells with one particular doctor.

The video - which has hundreds of thousands of views - shows one user marinating the chicken in NyQuil before cooking and eating it.

NyQuil is an American brand of medicine that is known for its strength in fighting symptoms of the common cold and putting people to sleep.

According to some TikTok profiles, the “sleepy chicken” was created as a way to treat a cold while getting your evening meal at the same time - however the method could cause an overdose of the syrup.

After one US doctor, Aaron Hartman, saw the video he told MIC.com that eating chicken drenched in this medicine could be lethal.

In an interview, he said: "When you cook cough medicine like NyQuil, however, you boil off the water and alcohol in it, leaving the chicken saturated with a super concentrated amount of drugs in the meat.

“If you ate one of those cutlets completely cooked, it’d be as if you're actually consuming a quarter to half a bottle of NyQuil.”

Parents are continually reminded to monitor what their children are consuming on all social media apps, and depending on their age, parents are advised to place all available kids filters onto their profiles before use.
