Doctor says eating bananas for breakfast is a bad idea

Many of us struggle for time in the morning and often grab an easy breakfast on our way to work.

Bananas are a go-to for commuters and parents on the school run.

But they are not as healthy as they seem - according to Nutritional expert, Dr. Daryl Gioffre.

While bananas are filled with potassium and vitamin B6 and free of cholesterol and sodium they also have quite a lot of sugar.

Dr Gioffre told Byrdie : "Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren't the best option because they’re 25% sugar and moderately acidic.

"They’ll give you a quick boost, but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry".

If you are going to eat a banana, Dr Gioffre recommends not eating them after a meal and, when snacking on one, being sure to pair it with something else either fatty (healthy fats) or with spices.

Tesco customers will now find themselves paying more for bananas at its Metro stores (Rui Vieira/PA Wire)

Some of his favorites include raw almond or coconut butter, chia, hemp, flax, coconut oil, cinnamon, and turmeric

He said: "Because bananas are acidic, you’ll have to neutralise the acid to get the benefits of potassium, fibre, and magnesium without the sugar rush".
