Doctor reveals why men suffer with coronavirus worse than women

Doctor Amir Khan has revealed why men seem to suffer worse from coronavirus than women.

Appearing alongside Ben Shephard and Kate Garroway on ITV daytime show Good Morning Britain, Doctor Amir Khan revealed one simple factor helps protect women better than men.

Ben and Kate quizzed the doctor on a recent study which claimed men are more vulnerable to Covid-19 than women, something Dr Khan agreed with.

You can see his reason why in the video above.

Dr Khan told Ben and Kate: ""Yes, certainly. In my experience and the patients I have seen with the worst symptoms of coronavirus tend to be men.

"Oestrogen, the idea is that this specifically can be protective.

"What it does is boost your immune system so your immune system reacts quicker to the virus once it takes hold and so you get less of a severe response.

"So yes theoretically the contraceptive pill, HRT, can be protective in terms of boosting your immunity and protecting you against the serious signs and the serious symptoms of Covid-19."

It was revealed in the early months of the outbreak that men were die at twice the rate women do once they fall seriously ill with the virus in England and Wales.

As of June 2020, the figure was still ringing true twice as many men in the UK dying after contracting the virus than their female counterparts.

However, a study by the NHS Blood and Transplant team revealed men produce more coronavirus antibodies to fight the virus in comparison to women.

The news followed blood plasma collection from both men and women showed 43% of male plasma donors had high enough antibodies for their donation to be used compared to 29% of women, during the trial phase.

Good Morning Britain returns at 6am every weekday morning.
