Doctor raises concerns that vaccine might not work on elderly or young children

A doctor has raised concerns about the coronavirus vaccine potentially not working on the elderly.

In an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Dr Hilary said some vaccines already in circulation don't work on the elderly and added "it's really important we look at the nature of the vaccine".

The coronavirus vaccine may not be suitable for some elderly people.

The doctor spoke of how the vaccine may be distributed once it has been successful developed, adding it would have to be rolled out to the most vulnerable first.

Dr Hilary said: "I think a phased vaccination could work."

He also said children may be low on the list to get the vaccine, adding: "Some young children don't respond to vaccines.

"... It's really important we look at the nature of the vaccine."

Speaking of illnesses that no longer pose a risk to public health because of the success of vaccines, the doctor slammed the approach of "antivaxxers".

He said: "I suspect all those antivaxxers will be first in the queue for this.

"... We've become complacent because we don't see it as a risk anymore.

"... Vaccination has saved millions and millions of lives and that's why we're praying for a vaccine against coronavirus."

When talking about a potential return to work, Dr Hilary was equally concerned and said he didn't social distancing measures should be eased.

He said: "Lockdown has worked quite well, we're not out of the woods just yet... it just seems a ridiculous step to make when we've done so well over the last six weeks."

He agreed shifts would likely need to be staggered but expressed concerns over a second peak.
