Doctor jailed for date rape

Editor’s Note July 31, 2020: The story below is a historical report of the finding of the court. Since the time of publication of this story, Dr Arvind Sharma has been acquitted of rape after being granted a retrial. The ABC subsequently reported on Dr Sharma’s acquittal.

A Victorian doctor has been sentenced to six years jail for date rape.

Arvind Sharma, 37, of Bendigo, was found guilty of three counts of indecent assault and seven counts of rape.

Sharma was drunk when he molested a 24-year-old woman and raped her seven times at his home in 2006.

The court heard she had pretended to be asleep and did not complain because she was scared of him.

The doctor also took pictures of the assault with his mobile phone.

In sentencing, Judge Frank Shelton said Sharma was highly regarded in his profession, but his career had been ruined by his offending.

Sharma will be eligble for parole in four years.
