Doctor hits back at Question Time man who said £80k was average salary - by sharing his payslip

A doctor has revealed his own payslip as he hits back at a Question Time audience member who claimed doctors earned more than £80,000.

Rob Barber, an IT consultant and professional motorbike racer, became a controversial topic of conversation last week after he went on a rant during the political BBC programme.

During the filming in Bolton, the 36-year-old slammed Labour's plans to tax the top 5 per cent of earners - saying his salary was 'nowhere near even the top 50 per cent' of earners despite earning over £80,000.

Mr Barber said: "I would like to call Labour out as liars.

"I am one of them people he will tax more and I am nowhere near in the top five so I am calling you a liar.

"That 5% is a lie, I am nowhere near that and you are going to tax me as an employee.

The man began a bizarre rant about his 'average' £80,000 salary (BBC)

"You are not going after the billionaires, you are going after the employees because its easy money and I have no choice because its PAYE."

But in another sting, he said: Every doctor in this country earns more than that. Every doctor, every accountant, every solicitor earns more than that. That's not five percent."

To dispute this, Dr Asif Munaf has shared his own payslip on Twitter.

He said: "This guy is terribly misinformed. 'All doctors get paid more than £80,000'.

"I spent 6 years at medschool and a further 7 years of specialist training and I get paid £48,000. He needs to #factscheck and use some of his £80,000 on a new shirt and trim."

When questioned if his revealed salary was pre-tax, Dr Munaf replied with a picture of his payslip and said: "Yep. Here's this month's payslip bearing in mind we are a single salary household with 18 month old son."

The post form the Nottingham based doctor has been inundated with comments.

"Well said and thank you for the amazing underpaid overworked service you bring to our NHS in Nottingham," one responded.

Another said: "You doctors are superheroes and we need you. Regards."

"Bravo Dr Asif Munaf. Not many people would be so open about things like thier pay. You deserve more than the man who thinks its the norm for a lot more people doctors solicitors etc to get the same as him. He needs a reality check," added a third.
