Doctor Hilary Jones warns of second spike of coronavirus when flights resume

Doctor Hilary Jones has warned that flights resuming could cause a second spike of coronavirus in the UK and other countries.

Airlines like TUI, Jet2 and Ryanair have been issuing regular updates on when they expect to be air borne again, with id-July now looking likely for flights to travel to and from the UK and new rules set to be introduced on hand luggage.

But, while many people are clinging onto the hope of jetting off to sunnier climes for a summer holiday or a city break, Good Morning Britain health expert Dr Hilary said he would "absolutely not" want to get on a flight.

He told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: "I just think that the air travel situation is running big risks.

"People sitting closely together in close proximity, breathing the same air, masks or not, tests or not, screening with temperatures really not very effective."

Air travel is what makes a pandemic global.

He added: "I think by kowtowing to the economic needs of the aviation industry we are putting health at risk.

"We are running risks of a second spike [of coronavirus] here in the UK and elsewhere."

Announcing its intention to delay its flights starting again until July 15 last week, Jet2 said: "In view of the ongoing travel restrictions that are in place as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to recommence our flights and holidays programme on July 15th.

"Customers who were due to travel before July 15th do not need to contact us. We are continuing to proactively contact customers to discuss their options, one of which is rebooking their holiday to a later date.

"For customers with a booking that is due to depart on or after July 15th, the booking is subject to our normal terms and conditions.
