Doctor Hilary Jones warns full easing of restrictions is 'too much too soon'

Doctor Hilary Jones has warned that the full easing of restrictions on July 19 is "too much too soon."

As expected, Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation late on Monday afternoon to confirm that in two weeks time, the Government is planning to scrap Covid rules, including the need to social distance and wear a face mask in public.

Bans on mass events will also be lifted, meaning that sports stadiums, music venues and theatres can return to being at full capacity and nightclubs can finally open their doors once again after a tough 17 months.

Chris Whitty lists three situations in which people should still wear a face mask

Face masks will become optional rather than mandatory, although, appearing alongside Johnson at the briefing, Professor Chris Whitty said people should continue to wear one: when in a crowded situation indoors; when required to by an authority and if someone else was uncomfortable with you not wearing a mask - as a point of "common courtesy."

Dr Hilary reacted to the announcement on both Tuesday's Good Morning Britain and Lorraine and it was appearing at the start of the latter that he urged caution.

Speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, the TV medic said: "I think taking away all restrictions, all in one fell swoop when we've got rising cases, cases rising exponentially and very fast with a new variant, is rather dangerous.

"It's too much too soon I think.

"And when he (Johnson) says... when he asks the question 'if we don't do it know when will we do it; the answer to that is when everyone is vaccinated."

Nodding in agreement, Lorraine replied: "Yeah and when it's safer maybe?"

Talking about the low death rate and success of the vaccination rollout, Dr Hilary added: "So yes, vaccinations, the programme has been very successful; it has reduced hospitalisations and deaths yes, but the more cases we have, the more risk there is of another new variant, which could render all the vaccination we've done useless.

"It's unlikely but it's a possibility. The vaccinations that people have had are almost certainly going to give a good protection against any new variant but we can't take that for granted.

"I just think that staying with some basic guidelines would have been a good idea.

"And while it's not written in stone yet that we're going to abandon all restrictions, we're going to review it on July 12, I think they're warning us that it is going to happen because they're already saying 'we know there is going to be more cases by the time we take away the restrictions.

"There could be 50,000 a day."
