Doctor Hilary Jones has warned that a month-long lockdown may not be long enough, saying no-one can predict what will happen.
Nearly two days have now passed since Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that England would be going into lockdown for a second time this year as coronavirus infections climb to worrying levels again.
The tough restrictions, which will see bars, restaurants and hairdressers close but schools and universities stay open, will come into force on November 5 and be in place until December 2.
But, giving his reaction to them on Monday's Lorraine, Dr Hilary told the famous TV host that he wasn't sure a four week stint would be enough.
"It probably won't be, we just don't know until we see what the numbers do.
"No-one can predict where we'll be in four weeks time. We look at the data and we've got lot of tests being done to show us what will be happening.
"We won't know for three weeks, so going into lockdown now, some people said we should have done it previously, people know what they are being asked to do and in four week time we'll look at the figures, see what's happening in hospitals, see what's happening in intensive care units and then a decision will be made."
Urging people not to get ahead of themselves, Dr Hilary, who has c alled for tougher restrictions for weeks and warned about the impact on Christmas added: "I don't think anyone responsible can promise what will happen in four weeks time, we'll just have to see how the virus is behaving.
"If we get numbers down and get Test & Trace in place, we've got a fighting chance of having a normal life next year."
