Doctor Hilary Jones reveals why pregnant women can't get COVID vaccine yet

Doctor Hilary Jones has revealed the safety concerns behind pregnant women not being allowed to get the coronavirus vaccine yet.

On Wednesday, there was great excitement across the UK when it was confirmed that a vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech had been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and mass vaccination is now able to start from as early as "next week".

The Government has secured 40 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, with 10 million due in the UK by the end of the year.

TV medic Doctor Hilary reacted to the news and the response to it on Thursday's Good Morning Britain and, after speculation as to who will get vaccinated first, he also addressed questions from expectant mums who'd got in touch with the show for answers on where they stood with getting it.

And Dr Hilary told host Ben Shephard that there is a big reason why they won't be offered it as things stand right now.

He explained: "Currently, the Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation is saying we haven't done enough work on pregnancy yet to be able to say confidently that they should be vaccinated.

"And we always take absolute precautions with any medicine or procedure in pregnancy, because of the risk to unborn babies.

"I am not saying there is a risk, but we don't know, therefore it makes absolute sense to say, we need to be cautious until we have rolled the vaccine out to many many more people, and animal studies, to make sure there is no harm to the foetus.

"It is probably the case that pregnant women are not being vaccinated, just like we are not vaccinating children under 16".

t is expected that the first people to be receive a vaccine will be care home residents and staff.
