Doctor Hilary Jones reveals how your blood type could increase risk of coronavirus

Doctor Hilary Jones has revealed how your blood type could put you at more risk of contracting coronavirus.

As he has done throughout lockdown. Good Morning Britain's health expert was back on the show on Friday to respond to reports surrounding the global pandemic, as well as answering viewer questions.

And it was during a chat with hosts Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh that he got onto the subject of the correlation between blood group and COVID-19.

Dr Hilary explained: "What about genetics? So, this idea that if you are blood group A, you are more likely to need oxygen and ventilation and have more severe symptoms, is interesting," he began.

"If you are blood group O you are relatively more protected - that is 44 per cent of the population - and will have less severe symptoms.

"Blood group A is 42 per cent of the population and they might be vulnerable."

However, while detailing what has been reporter, Dr Hilary said, that in his opinion, more evidence was required to make a firm judgement.

He added: "It is interesting. We do not know if it is true because we have not had a cohort of people to study who have less severe symptoms, to compare to the group who have had more severe symptoms.

"So we need to do that."
