Doctor Hilary Jones outraged at "ridiculous" social distancing suggestion for workers

Doctor Hilary Jones was left outraged on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain after a chief medical offier suggested that two metre social distancing doesn't need to be in place when employees return to work.

On Monday Professor Karol Sikora, CMO at Rutherford Health PLC, tweeted: "There is no scientific basis for the two metre rule.

"We know keeping one metre apart is crucial. The WHO back this and it's far more practical. We need to see the evidence that two metres is necessary - show us the science!"

And then appearing on GMB the morning after, Professor Sikora told presenters Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard: "There is no science about the separation. There is some science on droplet spread from people that have been done on the past, but they’re not conclusive.

"If we have lockdown, if we have an app to identify people that have infection and people obey it, if people continue to do that, and people self-isolate if they have symptoms, there will be no problem. "But workplaces do need some form of closeness together – not less than one meter, but certainly not two metres.

The comments were shut down by Dr Hilary, who has been appearing on GMB on a daily basis to hit home the importance of people social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

He hit back: "I can not agree with that....we're not out of the woods yet.

"Listen we’ve been telling people to socially distance for six weeks.

"The thought of reducing our two-meter distance apart for 15 minutes to sitting next to somebody for eight hours a day at one meter apart just seems a ridiculous step to make right now when we’ve done so well in the last six weeks.’

He added: "I think we will still need to maintain social distancing and if people go to work we need them to be safe."
