Doctor Hilary criticises 'inappropriate' talk of foreign holidays amid concerns of third wave

Doctor Hilary Jones has slammed foreign holiday plans as "inappropriate" as talk of a third wave of coronavirus causes concern.

Tuesday marked a year since the country went into lockdown for the first time as Covid-19 spread, with hardly anyone expecting us to still be in the same situation a year later.

The third national lockdown has started to ease with the re-opening of schools and slight relaxing of rules on meeting people outside for things other than exercise.

There's a big change on Monday, March 29 when the rule of six is allowed again outdoors, before bars and restaurants can serve customers outside from April 12.

Any relaxations on trips abroad are set to come on May 17 at the earliest, with it announced on Monday that it will be illegal to travel abroad without a reasonable excuse from Monday, with those in breach of the rules facing a fine of £5,000.

The announcement came after concerns of a possible third wave in Europe, due to variants and strains of the virus circulating, with Good Morning Britain's resident health expert D r Hilary warning that whatever happens in the continent will come here.

After agreeing with Susanna Reid that "whatever happens in Europe will happen to us" Dr Hilary said: "People talking about holidays at the moment, it’s not appropriate.

"It’s foolhardy… ‘It’s international travel that’s transmitting the virus more quickly than anything else. Aircraft and people being able to move very quickly throughout the world.

"We’re also seeing new variants, it’s not just the original virus that’s causing mayhem, it’s the new variants that are also potentially very damaging."

He added: "If we’re too lax with the regulations, we will have another wave, we will have more people in hospital," before urging viewers it was "imperative" they still take the pandemic seriously.
