‘Doctor G’ trailer shows Ayushmann struggling as a male gynaecologist; here are some myths we need to bust

Ayushmann Khurrana is known for choosing scripts that shatter societal stereotypes, and his next film ‘Doctor G’ is following into his pattern of addressing uncomfortable issues with humour, in an attempt to create a dialogue and promote normalisation.

The makers of the film dropped the teaser on Tuesday which has already gone viral. The film revolves around a medical student (Ayushmann), who is struggling as the only male student in the gynaecology department, finding it as a job more suited for women.

'Doctor G' will hit the theatres on October 14, and we can see the film's treatment of the subject. However, the trailer has already succeeded in triggering conversation around male gynaecologists.

Dr. Surakshith Battina, Endoscopic Surgeon, Fertility Specialist and Cosmetic Gynaecologist, talks about some common myths which need busting in his YouTube video. Take a look:

My relatives will sneer at me and think that I am crazy

The qualification of your doctor should be considered in matters of health, and not what your relatives would think. Male and female gynaecologists both have to go through the same amount of training to get to where they are. So your health care decisions should be taken by you and not your relatives.

What if the male doctor gets turned on if I talk about my sex life?

This is not true. You are probably going to experience the same amount of awkwardness in discussing your sex life, whether it's a male doctor or a female doctor. Remember that a doctor is a doctor. Talking about this should not be an issue with a trained healthcare professional.

Male gynaecologist might feel me up during examination

A gynaecolohist, whether male or female, will be professional in carrying out their duty. Moreover, during a gyno examination, a doctor is always accompanied by a nurse. Even though there is no need to ask or request for a nurse since it is a norm, make sure you do not get your gyno exam done in the absence of a nurse.

All male gynaecologists are gay

Male gynaecologists may or may not be gay. However, this reason to not go for a male gynaecologist sounds more like prejudice against the professional abilities of the people identifying with the LGTBTQIA+ community.

I don't want to expose my vagina to them at every visit

This concern, though valid, should not be a concern due to the available technology. The imaging modalities are so modern these days -- the ultrasounds, the MRIs, the CTs are so advanced that the doctor does not even have to touch you to come to a diagnosis.

Some women prefer male gynaecologists as they find them to be less judgemental and more calmer and more empathetic towards their pain. However, Dr. Battina argues that these may not be true in all cases, and can vary based on personal experience.

Disclaimer: In genital examination, the sex of the patient and sex of the doctor can have a significant influence on the patient's preferences. The patient's preferences can and should be accommodated.

It’s important for a female nurse to be present when a woman is getting examined by a male doctor. If you feel uncomfortable with a male doctor, it is recommended to raise the concern.

According to the Medical Council of India, “abuse of professional position by committing adultery or improper conduct with a patient or by maintaining an improper association with a patient will render a physician liable for disciplinary action as provided under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the concerned State Medical Council Act.”
