Doctor Foster won't return for a third series as writer Mike Barlett is 'done' with BBC show

Sad news for Doctor Foster fans, the show won't be returning for a third series, it's been confirmed.

Writer Mike Bartlett says he's "done" with the hugely popular BBC One show for good as both he and the cast have now moved on.

Millions tuned in every week to watch the antics of scorned wife Dr Gemma Foster, played by Suranne Jones, as she took revenge on her cheating husband Simon (Bertie Carvel), with the second and final series ending in 2017.

But unfortunately, Mike has now said he has "no burning desire" to pen more stories about the former couple.

He told The Sun : "We're definitely done and we're all doing — certainly they are doing — amazing things.

"Each of the two series feel like two different novels to me, so it's not like there's anything incomplete.

"It would only come back if we had the right story to tell in the right way — and I don't have a burning desire to find that story."

Series two of Doctor Foster had an average audience of 8.9million, while 9.8million people watched the series finale.

Mike's comments come after Suranne also denied that there would be another season.

She said that she thinks there's nowhere else for Gemma's story to go.

When asked if it's definitely not going happen, she told the Radio Times: "Yes. I haven't said that before in interviews, as I tend to say: who knows?"

"I loved it, I love Mike Bartlett, I love [the producers] Drama Republic," she added.

"Series one was amazing, series two, equally, peaked at nearly ten million viewers and pushed in crazy directions. But I think Gemma's done."
