Doctor explains why you should not leave your heating on while sleeping at night

Although it may be tempting during this freezing cold weather we've had to leave the heating on overnight, a doctor has explained why you shouldn't.

Dr Karan Rajan said keeping the temperature down in your room could be beneficial for a number of reasons.

He spoke out as the temperatures plunge nationwide, causing households across the country to flock to their radiators and switch them off as the mercury takes a nosedive towards freezing, Birmingham Live reports.

He said: "Not only does melatonin increase sleep propensity, it's also a hormone that promotes anti ageing.

"It reduces oxidative stress damage and the levels of cortisol, it reduces systemic inflammation and it's free."

He added: "Our body's core temperature needs to drop to initiate sleep.

"So a cooler temperature gets you closer to the target sleep temperature of your body, so you fall asleep a lot faster", he said.

Dr Rajan added: "Warmer temperatures means your brain and body are more active trying to cool you down.

"This increased brain activity limits the amount of REM and slow wave sleep your body needs to recharge".

He said: "There is research to suggest that cold exposure can increase the amount of brown fat produced by stem cells.

"Brown fat helps to regulate cholesterol, blood glucose and improves insulin sensitivity".
