• I am the proud son of a coalminer and went to medical school in 1967 (Letters, 3 March). I had a long career in paediatrics in the UK as well as working in refugee camps in Indochina and hospitals in Africa. It is unlikely that a miner’s lad would ever be able to do that now, even if there were any.
