Doctor begs Covid-sceptic Tory MP to volunteer in her ICU as patients die

This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield spoke to Dr Ranj Singh and Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden on Thursday's show, where they reacted to the shocking viral video of a man forcibly trying to remove a patient from intensive care in a Surrey hospital, abusing the NHS staff and not wearing a mask.

Dr Ranj said it was the result of "fake news" misinformation leading people to believe Covid was less serious than it really is, while Dr Samantha said she was "gobsmacked" by the harrowing footage.

Phillip then explained: "Desmond Swayne [Conservative MP and former senior aide to David Cameron] has urged anti-vaccination campaigners to keep going with their fight against government restrictions, and told them that the NHS capacity figures were being manipulated to exaggerate the scale of coronavirus.

" Michael Gove has since called for him to apologise, but Samantha, that is a senior Tory MP saying that the figures are being manipulated to exaggerate the scale of coronavirus."

Shaking her head, Dr Samantha replied: "I just can't even, when you're a member of the NHS and you are giving your all and spending 16 hours in PPE and working seven days a week, working yourself into the ground to keep patients safe.

This worried doctors said shocking footage of a man trying to remove an ICU patient was a result of dangerous misinformation (ITV)

"To hear that from somebody representing the government is really upsetting and it's not acceptable, the pictures that you see of ambulances, queues down the road, they are real, and they have sick patients inside.

"Because we do not have enough beds to get patients out of ambulances and into A&E, we don't have enough beds to get patients out of A&E into ventilated intensive care.

"This is very real, and we are living and breathing it every day.

Dr Samantha said the Tory MP who said she was "exaggerating" should come and help her patients in ICU (ITV)

"And if the Tory MP wants to see that they are very welcome to volunteer in my ICU, where we are short-staffed, to help turn patients on to their fronts, so that they can fight for their lives."

Dr Samantha added: "I have had some abuse on social media, and that's everything from people saying, 'I don't care who I murder by not wearing a mask', to yesterday people calling ICU doctors 'ventilator killers'.

"It's a small minority, though a vocal one, but we are overwhelmed with the support that the public have shown us through this time, we do really appreciate everyone who is doing that and staying at home for us."
