Doctor and former Munster player Tom Gleeson finds it difficult to see team sports back by August

Doctor and former rugby player Tom Gleeson finds it difficult to see team sports making a return in Ireland by August.

The government published a roadmap for easing Covid-19 restrictions last Friday which opened the door to gaelic games and soccer returning in late July, with rugby having to wait a few weeks later until August 10.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar also said on The Late Late Show that there is "a possibility of an All-Ireland championship played behind closed doors this year", but that it would be a decision for the GAA.

But Gleeson, who played for Munster between 2006 and 2012, believes it will be difficult for team sports to return by August - even behind closed doors.

Gleeson, who is working as a doctor in Cork’s Mercy University Hospital, told Sunday Sport on RTE Radio 1: "I think every one of us would love nothing more than to be watching sport on our TVs at the moment and giving us a distraction from all that's going on around us.

"Looking at the roadmap that they've laid out, I think it's taking us up to the end of August.

"I find it difficult to see, particularly team sports, getting back at that stage to performing in front of open crowds in particular but also behind closed doors.

"From my experience in both rugby and in the hospitals over this crisis, I don't know how comfortable I'd be going on to a rugby pitch within close proximity to 29 other guys and potentially exposing both myself, but more importantly loved ones by bringing it home.

"At the end of the day all it takes is one person to have it theoretically it could spread expediently so I don't know how comfortable I'd be in that setting to be honest with you.

"As much as I'd love to see it back on the TV, I find it difficult to see that it will be back anytime over the next couple of months."
