Dockers urged to cash in on Walters magic

Michael Walters looms as a key figure for Fremantle in their important AFL clash with Geelong. (AAP)

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says it's become laughable just how often Dockers players are missing out on the opportunity to pass it to Michael Walters this season.

Walters has endured one of the toughest years of his glittering career, with the 30-year-old booting just 13 goals from 14 games playing predominantly in attack.

But Walters thrived when moved to the wing for last week's 62-point win over Hawthorn, tallying 21 disposals and a goal.

Walters looms as a key figure in Thursday night's clash with Geelong at Optus Stadium, and Longmuir wants his team to make better use of the 2019 All-Australian.

"I understand everyone looks at the stat sheet at the end of the day ... but the amount of times we've been missing him is almost laughable," Longmuir told 6PR.

"He'll be on his own in the middle of the ground and we're either doing miss-kicks to him or haven't seen him.

"It actually became a bit of a thing in the box, laughing at how much we're missing him and not seeing him and not giving the ball to him.

"When he touches the footy, it turns into scores. We just want the ball in his hands as much as we can.

"We'll have to continue to give him a little bit of wing time, little bit of midfield time and still maintain his forward time and just try and put him where we think he can impact the game."

Fremantle sit in seventh spot with an 8-8 record. It's the first time the Dockers have been inside the top eight this late in a season since they won the minor premiership in 2015.

Third-placed Geelong (12-4) could fall out of the top four if they lose to the Dockers, meaning the stakes are high for both sides.

"I haven't thought much about top-two, but top-four is on the table for us if we play well enough," Geelong coach Chris Scott said.

"But we're far from a guarantee for that. I think we've got enough wins to guarantee we'll play finals, but that's about it at this stage."

The Cats will welcome back skipper Joel Selwood and forward Luke Dahlhaus after they were rested from last week's 26-point win over Carlton.

Fremantle hold a 1-5 record this season against teams currently sitting inside the top-eight, and Longmuir said the game against Geelong will be a good guide as to where his team sit in the pecking order.
