Man charged after AFL player's brother killed while walking along road

Brendan Ballantyne was walking along Ennis Avenue when he was hit by a car.

The brother of Fremantle Dockers forward Hayden Ballantyne has been killed in a crash in Perth's southern suburbs.

Brendan Ballantyne, 22, died after he was hit by a car while walking on a road in Waikiki on Saturday night.

Police said he was struck by a silver station wagon travelling northbound on Ennis Avenue, around 1 kilometre south of Safety Bay Road, about 9:15pm.

He suffered life threatening injuries and died at the scene.

The Dockers released a statement confirming the crash involved a relative of one of their players.

"The Fremantle Dockers would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family of Hayden Ballantyne after his brother Brendan was tragically killed on Saturday evening," the statement said.

"Our thoughts are with the Ballantyne family at this extremely difficult time."

A 47-year-old man has been charged with careless driving occasioning death over the crash.

He is due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court later this month.

Major Crash investigators have appealed for anyone who saw the car prior to or at the time of the crash to come forward.

Ballantyne, 31, has played 168 games for the Dockers and kicked 253 goals since making his debut in 2009.

He was handed a one-year contract extension in August to continue his career next season after kicking 21 goals this year.
