Doan keeps spirits high for Games

Japan soccer representative, midfielder Ritsu Doan, who plays for PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch league Eredivisie and will represent the nation in the under-23 team at the Tokyo Olympics, gave a telephone interview to The Yomiuri Shimbun. The 21-year-old talked about conflict over not being able to play soccer due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and his thoughts on the Games being postponed for a year.

Q: The Eredivisie league was suspended in mid-March and shut down. How are you getting along?

Doan: I stayed at home for a few weeks after the league was shut down. The other players were able to relax by spending time with their families, but I couldn't, so I came back to Japan in early April with permission from the manager and coaches. Now I'm at my parents' house in Hyogo Prefecture, and I do 3 to 4 hours of indoor training every day.

Q: In Europe, lockdowns and other measures have been implemented, what do you think about Japan?

A: Europeans look strong, but they are very sensitive. If they catch a cold or get a fever, they rest. In Japan, going to school or work despite being ill seems to be a virtue, I feel like things are heading in a bad direction at the moment. What surprised me most was that parks were even more crowded with children. I want people to be patient.

Q: What are the goals of the videos that cheer up healthcare professionals and show how you train?

A: I feel like soccer gives me courage after a natural disaster, as in the charity match for the Great East Japan Earthquake in which Kazu, or Kazuyoshi Miura, scored. Soccer players can't do anything when we are unable to play. Of course, artists like Gen Hoshino can encourage others from home, but all I can do is upload a muscle training video, it doesn't feel the same. The fact that all I can do is play soccer makes me feel helpless.

Q: What do you think about the Tokyo Games postponement?

A: I have been asking myself "could I be ready for the Olympics if they were held this summer?" If my answer is no, I'm lucky because I have another year to prepare, but if my answer is yes, I have only to continue for another year. If I look back on my season with PSV, I may not have achieved many things, but I am confident that I have confronted myself. It's up to me and my mental state.

Soccer is the only sport with an age limit at the Olympics. I must be more grateful for the chance to play at the Tokyo Olympics. I think the Tokyo Olympics will be the first big event after the current situation has settled. If Japan succeeds in winning the gold medal, it will be remembered for 100 years. So I am determined to keep my spirits high.

Doan Ritsu, born in Hyogo Prefecture, started in a subsidiary or youth organization of the J-League's Gamba Osaka, and moved to Eredivisie FC Groningen at the age of 19. Last summer, he transferred to PSV Eindhoven, a giant within the league, and made his international debut in September 2018 under current manager Hajime Moriyasu. As a right wing midfielder, he has played in 18 games and scored 3 goals.
