Do you want to be a firefighter? The service is recruiting in the North East - how to apply

Ever fancied being a firefighter?

The North East's three fire services have launched a recruitment drive for the first time in 10 years.

New jobs in the sector are rare so it's a massive opportunity for people looking for a new career.

If successful, trainees will be offered the chance to work for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) or County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS).

More than 20 jobs are expected to be handed out at the end of the process, with other impressive candidates being placed on a reserve list for future vacancies.

Taster sessions are planned throughout October to test potential recruits and find out if they're up the physical demands of the job.

You can apply now and applications will remain open for 10 days.

If you get through the first round, there are another seven rounds of tests before the training course begins in April 2020.

New starters will be on around £23,000 a year, progressing to £31,000 after full qualifying.

Chris Lowther, chief fire officer at TWFR, said: "After a long period of not recruiting new firefighters, this is will the third course we will have recruited to in just over a year.

"I’d urge anyone who wants to make a real difference to their community, is keen on physical fitness and who thrives on working in a team to apply.

"Our firefighters should reflect our communities and we want the right people to apply – that's irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity or sexuality.

"I’m looking forward to meeting our new recruits as every new course brings with it people from a range of backgrounds and diverse experiences that can only strengthen our Service. I wish all applicants the very best of luck.”
