An Indian woman living in Sweden recently shared a monthly breakdown of expenses in the country. She gave a rough idea of what it costs every month to spend on groceries, rent, travel, other charges like mobile and internet services. She suggested that the living costs in Sweden depend largely on the city and an individual's lifestyle.
Her estimates of monthly expenses in Sweden for a single person looked something like this: (1 Swedish Krona = ~ Rs 10.04 taken from SBI, dated August 6, 2026)
Rent: 8,000 and 15,000 SEK (approximately Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh)
Grocery: 3,000 to 5,000 SEK (around Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000)
Public transport: 1,000 SEK (roughly Rs 10,000) monthly
Mobile and internet costs: 300 and 700 SEK (approx Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000) a month
Utility bills: 500 to 1,500 SEK (around Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000)
Highlighting these as the major costs, the woman explained that it would cost somewhere between 18,000 and 25,000 SEK, which translates to Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh every month to live in Sweden. She, however, pointed out that the expenses also depend on the location and lifestyle.
Do you really need Rs 2.5 lakh/month to live in Sweden?
There is no easy or one word answer to this question. The expenses anywhere would depend majorly on the city an individual is living in and their lifestyle. At the same time, it is equally important to factor in the average salaries that people receive.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs data (January 2026), Sweden is home to 91,600 Indians, of which 24,000 are PIOs while 67,600 are NRIs. Most of them are professionals, predominantly in IT sector. Apart from that, there are an estimated 2,780 Indian students in Sweden.
For our estimates, we will take into consideration the average salary of an IT professional in the country. A software developer between the age of 35 to 44 years, can expect to make SEK 56,700 per month (approx. Rs 5.89 lakh), before taxes, as per the average remunerations shared on the government portal Statistics Sweden.
So, how much would you end up spending on an average?

According to Smartly.se, which helps immigrants plan their life in Sweden and sources data from official Swedish government agencies, a single person typically spends this much:

Of course, city plays a major role. For example, a single person would need somewhere around 25,000-32,000 SEK per month (around Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.2 lakh) to live comfortably in Stockholm. Smartly.se data suggests that a second-hand 1-bedroom runs 12,000-16,000 SEK/month (people who wish to buy outside the government waiting list); a first-hand (rent-controlled) equivalent is 8,000-12,000 SEK but has a waiting of 8-15 years.

A 2-bedroom apartment in the city could cost roughly 10,000-15,000 SEK per month for second-hand accommodation.
On the other hand, someone living in Malmö is likely to comfortably survive in 18,000-24,000 SEK per month (approx. Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 2.4 lakh)
Cost of living calculator for Sweden
Swedish government’s official website also offers a calculator, using which people can create an estimate of how much they would need to live comfortable in the country. Moreover, the calculator also pre-fills the average costs, expenses salary etc., depending on the city you decide to live in.For example, consider a 37-year old Software Engineer living in Stockholm. His average monthly income is shown as 58,976 SEK (Rs 5.93 lakh). After taxes, he is likely to get 40,504 SEK (Rs 4.07 lakh). In addition to this, he would also get a vacation pay of 528 SEK, which takes his total net household income to 41,032 SEK (Rs 4.12 lakh).
Going by the average costs in the calculator, his monthly costs including rent, public transport, and household expenses would come out to be 24,340 SEK or approx Rs 2.44 lakh. He can also keep 8,000 SEK (~Rs 80,000) for miscellaneous expenses.
After accounting for the expenses mentioned above, the individual would be left with 16,340 SEK (~Rs 1.64 lakh), which they can choose to invest, save etc.

For a family, the expenses will certainly go up, depending on whether they have kids, where they live, and which professions they are working in.
