Do you need to get a vaccine if you've already had coronavirus?

People who've previously been diagnosed with Covid-19 and have recovered or who have tested positive for antibodies in their blood, may be wondering if they still need to get the coronavirus vaccine.

And the answer is: Yes.

It is not yet clear how long, or how strong naturally-acquired antibodies from previous coronavirus infection last for.

The NHS said there is no evidence of any safety concerns from vaccinating individuals with a past history of Covid-19 infection, or with detectable antibody.

So people who have had Covid-19 disease (whether confirmed or suspected) can still receive the vaccine.

You can have the vaccine 28 days after you have a positive test for Covid-19, or 28 days after your symptoms started, according to the NHS Oxford University Hospital website.

Three vaccines have been approved for use in the UK - the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, the Pfizer/BioNTech jab and the Moderna vaccine.

The UK government is working its way through a priority list of the top four groups for vaccination doses.

The NHS is currently offering the vaccine to people most at risk from coronavirus.

In England, the vaccine is being offered in some hospitals and pharmacies, at local vaccination centres run by GPs and at larger vaccination centres. More centres are opening all the time.

It's being given to:

  • people aged 70 and over
  • people who are at high risk from coronavirus (clinically extremely vulnerable)
  • people who live or work in care homes
  • health and social care workers

The order in which people will be offered the vaccine is based on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

It is hoped that all adults aged 50 or over in the UK will be offered a vaccine by May 2021.
