Do you need a polling card and ID to vote in the Local Elections 2021?

Voters across the country will be heading to polling stations to cast their ballots in the local elections today.

Hundreds of local councillors, elected mayors and police and crime commissioners will be chosen across the whole of England during today's votes.

The scale of Election Day, which has been dubbed 'Super Thursday', is much larger this year after polls due to be held in 2020 were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Eligible voters will be able to cast their ballots at polling stations between the hours of 7am and 10pm.

But do you need your polling card of a form of ID to vote?

Polling cards are sent out to registered voters before the election and have details of your local polling station on them.

You do not have to take your polling card with you in order to cast your vote - but the Electoral Commission advises that having it with you can help speed up the process.

If you live in England, it is not necessary to take identification with you, but it wouldn't hurt to bring photo ID just in case.

All you will be asked for when you arrive at the polling station is your full name and your address.

You will then be crossed off the list of voters and handed your ballot paper.

This year voters are being advised to bring their own pen or pencil with them to mark their paper with.

This is to prevent the spread of coronavirus at polling stations.

You may also be asked to sanitise your hands before and after you vote.

Social distancing should be maintained inside polling stations and you should also wear a face covering unless you are exempt.
