‘Do we sleep in the car?’: Women get to their Fort Lauderdale Airbnb. Then they see what was left in the shower

A group of women traveling to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a bachelorette party had their celebratory spirits dampened when they saw the state of their Airbnb. Not only was the cleanliness questionable, but the guests found something left in the shower that made them want to “burn the place down.”

In a viral TikTok, Jenni DeLaricheliere (@delafrenchname) shared her discovery to over 3.1 million viewers. The clip begins with her covering her mouth in disbelief before flipping the camera to the shower area. First, she shows a small tub of Vaseline inside a trash can. Then she pans to the shower. Zooming in, she shows an elongated, black accessory affixed to a long hose that connects to the shower head. Her clip ends with a shot of her once again covering her mouth in revulsion.

“Just checked into our Airbnb being ‘ready,’” DeLaricheliere writes in the text overlay. “There’s a used Vaseline jar and whatever this is in the shower…do we sleep in the car or do we respectfully burn this place down?”

What was inside the shower?

While many of her viewers were confused about what the shower attachment was, others were quick to educate them. According to several comments–including DeLaricheliere’s–the shower attachment is meant for an intimate use one wouldn’t want to find in their Airbnb.

“I’m so confused and nobody’s explaining what any of this means,” a top comment read. DeLaricheliere replied, “It’s a tool used to clean out your back end. The Vaseline is used as a lubricant.”

Once others figured out the accessory was meant for preparation for intimate relations, the jokes kept rolling in.

“God forbid a brother out here wanna stay clean,” one wrote, with another echoing, “God forbid a person douches before leaving their Airbnb.”

A quick Amazon search reveals that there is such a device that one can attach to their shower. One of the many names it goes by is “Enema kit” or “shower enema system.” A listing on Amazon that appears similar to the one in DeLaricheliere’s video retails for $34.99. It has a 4.4-star rating with over 2,000 reviews.

But DeLaricheliere thought it was something she would rather not have come across. “Like why didn’t you take it with you?” she wrote. She agreed with one commenter who vowed to go back to hotels, writing, “Same. Airbnb needs to hold their places to higher standards.”

The TikToker revealed in a comment that the Airbnb was a superhost with a 4.9 rating, which made her shower discovery all the more shocking.

But that’s not all

In a follow-up clip, DeLaricheliere revealed more issues she found with her Airbnb. She showed termites crawling under the sliding doors, baby ants all over the kitchen island, rotten lawn chairs, and stained bed sheets. According to the creator, she contacted the host but did not hear back.

The creator being dissatisfied with her Airbnb is just one of the plethora of bad experiences folks have had with the homesharing platform. In a story the Mary Sue covered, a guest shares how a host “blackmailed” her after she left a less-than-perfect review. In a similar story, a woman says the host retaliated against her 4-star review.

But guests aren’t the only ones having nightmare experiences in relation to Airbnbs. Hosts have also reported guests destroying their homes, like one woman whose guests racked up $100,000 worth of damage.

What should you do if you are unsatisfied with your Airbnb experience?

If you ever find yourself dissatisfied or unsafe with your rental, Airbnb recommends contacting its 24/7 customer support line. You can also contact the host if you have any complaints regarding your stay, but if they appear to be unhelpful or unresponsive, contacting Airbnb directly can help resolve your issue.
