The Oakland Raiders will enter the 2019 season feeling good about their quarterback situation. Derek Carr has a bunch of new weapons at his disposal and should be playing behind a new and improved offensive line.
However, is it possible they have an issue behind Carr? Currently, the backup quarterbacks on the roster are veterans Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman.
According to Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, the Raiders have the ninth-worst backup quarterback situation entering the 2019 season. Take a look at Gagnon’s thoughts on the Raiders’ quarterbacks:
Glennon isn’t a bad backup. He completed all but six of 21 passes last season in Arizona, he’s got plenty of starting experience, and he should be in his prime at age 29. But it’s worth noting he’s on his fourth team in as many seasons, and that Peterman was taking second-team reps during the late stages of the offseason program.
These backups have a relatively high ceiling but also a fairly low floor.
If Carr were to get injured at any point in the season, the Raiders could be in trouble. However, don’t be surprised if they are in the quarterback market closer to when the season begins.
There is always the possibility that Glennon or Peterman clicks in Oakland and one of the two veterans develops into a high-end backup to Carr. Look for Peterman and Glennon to battle for the No. 2 job in training camp.
