Do the Bears have the No. 1 defense heading into 2019?

When discussing the best defenses in the NFL, the 2019 Chicago Bears are always in the conversation.

Adam Schein ranked his top nine defenses for the 2019 season, and it wasn’t so much a question of if the Bears landed on the list, as it was where they landed.

Schein has the Bears as the third-best defense in the league, which was where they ranked overall (total yards) last year.

Losing Vic Fangio to the Broncos is a blow, but his successor at coordinator, Chuck Pagano, certainly knows defense (he has a quarter century of experience coaching that side of the ball) and has an embarrassment of riches to set loose on offenses. No team allowed fewer points than the Bears last season (17.7 per game), and I expect more of the same from them in 2019.

Schein ranked two defenses ahead of the Bears: the Chargers and Cowboys.

With the Bears returning all but one defensive starter — and adding a couple of players that might be considered upgrades when all is said and done — there’s no reason this defense can’t be the dominant force it was last season.

Even with a new defensive coordinator in Chuck Pagano, the Bears defense has shown no signs of slowing down — even in training camp. And with guys like Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Jackson, Kyle Fuller and Roquan Smith, this Bears defense should once again be a force in the league.
