Do people in Castle Douglas think General Election will end the Brexit deadlock?

Is there anything to be said for another vote?

MPs certainly seem to think so, having finally agreed to a general election on December 12.

It’s hoped it will break the deadlock that has seen Boris Johnson repeatedly fail to get parliamentary backing for his efforts negotiating the UK’s exit from the EU, resulting in Brexit being delayed once again.

As a result, voters will head to the polls next month.

We asked people in Castle Douglas if they think it will finally provide a solution.

Mel Hartley. (Jim McEwan)

Mel Hartley, from Ilkley, said: “We said this morning that if you were recruiting and these were your candidates, you’d want to scrap it and readvertise the job.

“I think people are battle weary. If it was a ticket to a solution we’d be more enthusiastic but it looks like it’s a ticket to more confusion.”

Andrew Firth. (Jim McEwan)

Pal Andrew Firth said: “You’re almost pushing people down that route of not voting.

“I’d like to think it’s going to be a solution but I’m very sceptical.”

Deborah Hartley. (Jim McEwan)

Mel’s wife Deborah said: “I’d like the whole country not to vote.

“I watch The Last Leg and I remember when the Conservatives were trying to choose a new leader. They put a picture of a cameraman in to see if the audience knew who all the candidates were and loads of people assumed the cameraman was a candidate.

“I believe most people go into politics wanting to make a change but you’ve got to make deals to get their deal through. It’s a shame we can’t trust politicians any more.”

Morag Macpherson. (Jim McEwan)

Morag Macpherson, from Kirkcudbright, is looking forward to casting her vote – but she’s not convinced it will have the desired effect.

She explained: “It’ll give me a chance to vote for who I want but I don’t know if it’ll make a difference in the grand scheme.

“I look forward to putting a tick in the right box as far as I’m concerned but whether it’ll make a difference don’t know. Many people put a tick in a different box.”
