'Do not underestimate the water' - Kayaker rescued from Severn Estuary near Bristol

An exhausted kayaker was rescued from a 'rapidly incoming tide' while paddling in the Severn Estuary, near Bristol

Volunteers from the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) raced to the woman after her fellow paddlers, from Thornbury Sailing Club, raised the alarm.

A SARA spokesperson has now warned people not to 'underestimate the water, even on a calm hot day', reports Gloucestershire Live.

Several crews were deployed to the stranded kayaker, including Chepstow Coastguard.

SARA posted on its Facebook page, saying: “They had set out on a round trip from Thornbury Sailing Club but one of their party had become exhausted - not ideal on a rapidly incoming tide.

“Luckily one of the security team at Oldbury Nuclear Power Station contacted the coastguard to raise the alarm.

“The SARA crew brought the exhausted kayaker, and escorted her companions back into the sailing club. Our Sharpness Lifeboat Station crew were there standing by with a shore-based SRT team and a small boat, in case extra help was required, and Chepstow Coastguard also attended.

“We shouldn’t need to say it, but the tides in the Severn Estuary can be remarkably strong. Please do not underestimate the water, even on a calm hot day.”
