'Do NOT buy this type of bone' warns vet after two dogs get it stuck around their jaws

"Please do NOT buy this bone": that is the warning from a vet hospital after seeing two separate cases where a specific type of dog treat had become stuck around the dog's jaw.

Dublin Veterinary Hospital urged owners that so-called treat is "not worth the risk" due to the danger it poses to your pet.

The bone is made by "Benebone" - a chew toy manufacturer - and is sold by a number of companies but its flawed design left two dogs in need of urgent medical attention.

The dogs were lucky to escape with no lacerations or broken teeth, say vets. (Dublin Veterinary Hospital/ Facebook)

Dublin Veterinary Hospital said: "This is the second dog in the last two weeks that we’ve had come in to our hospital with this type of bone stuck around its mandible.

"Please do NOT buy this type of bone for your pup! It’s not worth the risk.

"Luckily for this patient, our technician was able to wiggle it free but our previous patient was under general anesthesia for nearly a half hour while we went through every tool in our arsenal to saw through both sides of the bone safely.

Adding: "Both dogs are lucky that they did not end up with lacerations or broken teeth."

Benebone have since pulled the design from their inventory and are recalling the product from retailers - but the toy can still be found on shelves while sellers are being contacted.

The company has also agreed to foot any veterinary costs incurred by their toy - if you have been affected by the toy or know a dog that has you can contact them here.
