Do it for Dan campaign: The Boy and family behind the huge fundraiser

The 'Do it for Dan' campaign has taken over social media in recent weeks as the GAA and wider communities came together to help out a great cause.

The campaign is in aid of one-year-old Dan Donoher, son of former Laois footballers Aisling and Niall Donoher, who needs to receive life-saving treatment for the genetic neuromuscular disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1 and Scoliosis.

The campaign has seen people of all age groups, celebrities and sports stars all lend a helping hand to help change Dan's life.

Here's everything you need to know about the campaign:

What is the campaign in aid of?

The Do It For Dan campaign is raising funds for one-year-old Dan Donoher, who was diagnosed with a severe type 1 SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) condition in December.

The extremely rare and progressive condition leads to the loss of motor neurons that control muscle movement.

Dan requires ventilator support and such is the youngster's weakness, his parents have told that "a common cold could end Dan's life".

There was previously no cure for the condition, but a new treatment called Zolgensma has become available in American that could be life-saving for the toddler.

His parents, who both played inter-county football for Laois, are hoping to raise enough money to bring him to the US for life-saving treatment.

Have they reached their fundraising target?

Last Friday, parents Aisling and Niall revealed that they had reached their massive €2.1 million for Dan to receive his life-changing treatment.

“This is unbelievable!” a statement on the Do It For Dan Facebook page read last Friday night.

“To anyone about to commence fundraising activity, thank you sincerely for your support and for the work you have done but we ask that you please hold on progressing activity as we are currently totalling all funds raised and believe we have reached our goal.

“To all of the amazing clubs, families and fundraisers who are in the midst of their activity, please give it one last push to make sure we get over the line!

“With current live fundraisers close to completion and with direct donations we believe we have DONE IT FOR DAN!”

Can you donate?

The GoFundMe page is now no longer accepting donations. The current total raised on the page is over €1.9 million.
