Do I need to book a table for Ireland's pubs? Full list of rules for Christmas

As Christmas gets closer, the threat of further Covid-19 restrictions haven't gone away.

Comments made by the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and the Chief Medical Officer in recent days suggest the idea of introducing more rules before the big day hasn't been ruled out.

It comes as the fourth wave of Covid continues, with the Delta variant raging and the arrival of the Omicron variant causing huge concern.

It was with that in mind that the Government brought in restrictions earlier in December which specifically targeted areas such as hospitality and indoor events, with nightclubs closing and a host of new rules being brought in for pubs.

If you're unsure of how your Christmas night out will look, here's a helpful guide we've put together.

What will I need to get into a pub?

Digital Covid Cert

An EU Digital COVID Certificate (COVID pass) (vaccine or recovery certificate) is required for indoor hospitality and events, cinemas and theatres.

So that means you will need to provide your proof of vaccination to get in for a Christmas pint or two.

Since Tuesday 7 December, a COVID pass (vaccine or recovery) is also required for:

  • gyms and leisure centres (excluding access to swimming pools or standalone swimming pool facilities)
  • hotel bars and restaurants (that is, removing exemption for resident

What about masks?

Yep, they need to be worn when not at a table in a bar or restaurant.

If they are required, then you can remove them for eating or drinking.

Can I order at the bar?

No, it's table service only.

Not only that, there needs to be at least one metre between tables.

Other rules

  • maximum 6 adults per table (maximum 15 persons when including children aged 12 and younger)
  • no multiple table bookings and no intermingling
  • masks when not seated at table

What time will pubs close this Christmas?

A midnight closing time is in place for all on-licensed premises, including hotel bars and hotel residents’ bars, with all customers vacated from the premises by that time, regardless of the event taking place (for example: weddings, dinner dances and other similar style functions all finish at midnight).
