- The UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for most overseas visitors from 85 nationalities, including the United States, Canada, and France, who do not currently need a visa.
- From 25 February 2026, travellers will not be able to legally enter the UK without an ETA, with carriers checking compliance before travel to prevent fines.
- The ETA is obtained through an online application, costing £16, and requires applicants to provide a photograph and answer questions on suitability and criminality.
- Once approved, the permit is linked to the traveller's passport and is valid for repeated stays of up to six months within a two-year period or until the passport expires.
- Irish citizens, holders of eVisas, and those with permission to live, work, or study in the UK are exempt from needing an ETA, which aims to create a more streamlined and secure immigration system.
