Do I get an extra day off or more pay because Christmas Day 2021 is a weekend?

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday this year which has led many to ask if they are entitled to an extra day off work?

If Christmas Day was a Friday, as a Bank Holiday, people would automatically be given the day off in most cases, so what happens this year?

Well, the day is still a Bank Holiday so you are still entitled to get those benefits, even though you won't get them on Christmas Day itself.

According to Citizens Information, you are entitled to a day off at some other stage.

It states on their website: "When a public holiday falls on a day which is not a ‘normal working day’ for that business (for example, on Saturday or Sunday), you are still entitled to benefit for that public holiday.

"For example, you may get an extra day of annual leave, or an additional days pay, or a paid day off within a month of the public holiday. However, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work."
