Do children have to wear face masks in shops and supermarkets?

For the last few months many people have been wearing face masks or coverings when out and about due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While they have been optional in most settings up until now, this will change on Friday (July 24).

Just like on public transport, face masks or coverings will become compulsory in shops and supermarkets in England, just like they have already been in Scotland.

The change has been made as the government says the best available scientific evidence is that, when used correctly, wearing a face covering may reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets in certain circumstances, which in turn helps to protect others.

It is also strongly encouraged to wear a face covering in other enclosed public spaces where social distancing may be difficult and where you come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

However, there are exceptions, particularly when it comes to children.

Children under 11 are exempt from the new rule - which could lead to a £100 fine if not obeyed.

In Scotland children under five years of age are exempt.

The government does offer advice on face coverings for children which says they should be secured to the head using ear loops only.
