Do away goals still count for Chelsea in Champions League clash vs Atletico in neutral venue?

Chelsea return to UEFA Champions League action for the first time since December this evening when they face La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their last-16 clash.

However, in a season that has been like no other for everyone because of the pandemic, tonight's clash will be an away game for both sides, with the two clubs having to travel to Bucharest, Romania, for the first-leg.

That is because the Spanish government has restrictions in place for people entering the country from the UK, meaning the contest, just like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur's first-legs of their respective fixtures last week, must be played in a neutral country.

Thomas Tuchel believes Chelsea are ready for Champions League push

But whilst it is an away game for both clubs, the first-leg is considered as Atletico's home leg and Chelsea's away leg, even though the Spanish side will have no sense of home advantage, as they look to try and get themselves in a strong position ahead of the return-leg at Stamford Bridge next month.

Chelsea, tonight, will become the fifth Premier League club to have had to travel to a neutral venue for a Champions League or Europa League first-leg as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs all traveled to the likes of Budapest and Rome.

For the second season in succession, as a result of the pandemic, the European rule book has had to be tweaked. The ending of last season's tournaments were played to a resolution over single-leg ties in chosen host cities back in August.

Whilst it is a bonus that these games can still be played whilst specific travel bans are still in motion, there will no doubt be several clubs left feeling aggrieved that they have lost their home advantage.

With that in mind, does that mean that UEFA have scrapped the controversial away goals rule for this season's Champions League and Europa League?

The answer to that question is no, the away goals rule still counts just as it would in usual circumstances.

That means that should Chelsea claim a score draw in this evening's first-leg in Bucharest then they would have an advantage for the second-leg which, as things stand, will be staged at Stamford Bridge on March 17.

With that said, Chelsea will have the added bonus of home advantage next month in comparison to London rivals Arsenal, who will effectively be playing both legs of their Europa League last-32 tussle with Benfica away from home. The second leg is scheduled to take place in Greece on Thursday evening.
