Do away goals count in the Champions League as Chelsea take on Real Madrid in semi-final?

Chelsea are a clean sheet away from reaching their first Champions League final in nine years.

Tonight is the semi-final second leg clash against Real Madrid with the first-leg having taken place last week in Spain and finished 1-1 with both Christian Pulisic and Karim Benzema on the scoresheet for their respective sides.

But, Los Blancos' home game was not actually played at the famous Santiago Bernabeu.

Instead, it was staged at Real's 6,000-seater Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano arena at their training ground which has been their home for almost a year with the Bernabeu currently undergoing an extensive remodelling project.

As a result, because Real Madrid, technically, weren't playing in the Bernabeu there may have been a feeling that the home advantage they would usually get was lost.

With that said, there have been plenty of occasions this season where clubs have been asked to play ties in neutral venues due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

In fact, in the quarter-final, Chelsea overcame Porto 2-1 on aggregate with both games taking place at Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in Spain.

For the second season in a row, the European rulebook has had to be changed due to Covid. Last season's tournaments were played to a resolution over single-leg ties in chosen host cities in August.

So does that mean that UEFA have scrapped the controversial away goals rule for this season?

Do away goals still count in Chelsea vs Real Madrid?

Despite some clubs playing in neutral venues, UEFA have decided that away goals will still count in European competitions, including the Champions League.

That means Chelsea's score draw in the first leg will be enough for them tonight if they keep a clean sheet against the La Liga giants at Stamford Bridge.

The only scoreline that would take the game into extra-time is '1-1', but a '2-2' or a '3-3' would put Madrid in control of the tie by virtue of the away goals rule.
