'Do a U-y, mate… take it easy' - the new Satnav option that speaks proper Manc

“Looks like there's a crash up ahead. Look after yeself”. Nope, that isn't the voice of a concerned passenger in your ear - but is instead just one of the phrases coming out of a new, personalised satellite navigation feature.

To celebrate the variety of regional accents and dialects across the UK, crowd-sourced sat-nav app, Waze, is today (October, 21) launching a ‘Mancunian’ navigation experience as one of four new in-app voice options.

Through this local feature, users will be able to select from four new voice options to help guide them on the road, including the ‘twangy’ lilt of the Manchester dialect. As part of this immersive driving experience, users will hear their directions in a new yet oddly familiar way, with phrases such as “Do a U-y, mate… take it easy” and “It’s the third exit for this one, mate”. These voice navigation assistants can also alert users to upcoming hazards, such as “Looks like there's a crash up ahead. Look after yeself”.

Other phrases are peppered with words like "mad" and "proper" or pass comment such as: "sixth exit, this roundabout is massive innit?"

Ru Roberts, UK Country Manager at Waze, said: “We wanted to create a navigation experience that celebrates the UK’s unique regional identities and enables Wazers to feel a little closer to home while out on the roads.

"By activating our new Mancunian voice, users can personalise their navigation experience and even learn a few new phrases along the way.”

The four new voices will be available in the UK ongoing from October 19, 2022. To access the voices, visit My Waze > Settings > Voice & Sounds > Scroll to English UK > Waze Voice on App.
