DNA tests show Dutch fertility doctor used his own sperm to father 49 children

A Dutch fertility doctor accused of using his own sperm to inseminate patients without their consent has been confirmed as the father of 49 children.

Jan Karbaat was first taken to court by a group of donor children and their parents in 2017 over suspicions they were related.

At the time, judges ruled that DNA tests could be carried out, but said the results had to be sealed pending the outcome of further court cases, Dutch media reported.

The tests revealed Dr Karbaat had impregnated the women at his clinic near Rotterdam and the results were confirmed earlier this year after Rotterdam District Court allowed their release.

One of the children, named Joey, said he could finally move on now he knew Dr Karbaat was his father.

"After a search of 11 years I can continue my life. I am glad that I finally have clarity," he told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

The lawyer who represented the 49 children, Tim Bueters, said he was pleased about the outcome of the case after years of uncertainty.

"It means that there is finally clarity for the children who are matched," he told NOS.

Mr Bueters also said a procedure was underway to arrange compensation for the 49 children.

Dr Karbaat's clinic closed in 2009 and he died two years ago.

The BBC reported it closed due to allegations that Dr Karbaat falsified data, analyses and donor descriptions and exceeded the permitted number of six children per donor.
