DNA Journey fans 'choking up' at Martin and Roman Kemp's teary workhouse discovery

DNA Journey viewers have been left "choking up" at Martin Kemp and son Roman's family discovery about the Kemp family line.

Former EastEnders and Spandau Ballet star Martin, 59, and his DJ son Roman Kemp, 28, took part in the second run of the ITV series.

The episode saw Martin explore his paternal lineage and Roman explore his mother Shirlie's Holliman family line.

Martin and Roman joked that they don't even like seeing the relatives they know, saying: "We lock the door and close the blinds at christmas!"

Roman added: "You don’t even invite [Martin's brother] Gary round, mum does!"

While Roman discovered that a maternal ancestor had a connection to an Egyptian King, Martin showed off his old family home in London to Roman.

Martin reminisced about how "loving" his home was growing up with brother Gary Kemp, along with his mother's upset and not being able to afford some things.

He added how pleased he was to give his parents what they had not had before.

Roman praised his father as his "hero", asking "how could he not" choose him as his personal hero, to a clearly emotional Martin.

The pair went on to discover that Martin's grandmother had been placed in a workhouse at the age of 10 for "pauperism".

The resilience of Martin's family leaves him with a "warm" feeling and a sense of pride in a clearly emotional moment.

"It just gives me more respect for my dad. It just sounds like a long line of struggle," notes Martin.

Roman then gets very tearful as he notes how privileged he has been in his home thanks to the hard work of his family, with his dad having struggled previously.

Viewers of the episode took to social media to share their thoughts on the emotional scene.

One Twitter user penned: "I'm choking up along with Martin and roman here, #DNAJourney ".
