Some of the greatest athletes ever have thrived on slights – both real and imagined. It seems Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase might be one of them. Chase has taken exception to a quote by Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf from earlier this week.
The quote is slightly out of context, as Metcalf spent the previous minute praising Chase and what he did last week against the Cardinals. However, nevertheless DK has predicted that Seattle’s sudden star rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon will get the better of Chase. Chase has since retweeted the quote on his account.
This whole exercise is a little bit silly, because odds are we may only get a handful of one-on-one matchups between Witherspoon and Chase anyway. Under Pete Carroll the Seahawks have always been a zone-first kind of team and except for a handful of games when Richard Sherman was at his peak of his powers they have never allowed their cornerbacks to trail No. 1 wide receivers.
Witherspoon might eventually be another exception to that rule but it would come as a surprise in his fourth game. It’s also worth mentioning that Riq Woolen might be a better matchup against Chase given the size differential involved. In any case, Witherspoon has proven capable of making high-impact stops all over the field no matter what his original assignment.
The broader matchup between Cincinnati’s loaded wide receiver corps and Seattle’s deep and talented crop of cornerbacks may be one of the most interesting unit clashes we witness the entire season league-wide.
