Djokovic in ominous form in Australian Open second-round win, as first top-10 seed falls

Novak Djokovic's Australian Open title defence remains on track after a decisive victory over Japan's Tatsuma Ito in the second round.

The 31-year-old wildcard was little more than a speed bump in the 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win for Djokovic, whose only concern will be the five double faults he served in the 90-minute match.

It looked a much easier outing for the world number two than his opener against Jan-Lennard Struff, who took a set off the Serb and forced a tiebreak.

But this time Djokovic was rolling and was just about unstoppable when he landed his first serve, winning all but three of those 46 points.

He also blasted 31 winners past his opponent and made just 17 unforced errors, while Ito's tallies were almost a perfect reverse — 18 and 29 respectively.

The seven-time Australian Open champion faces another Japanese player in the third round, with world number 71 Yoshihito Nishioka waiting after taking down 30th-seeded Briton Dan Evans.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will be one of the most well-rested players in the third round after Philipp Kohlschreiber was an early scratching from their second-round match.

Kohlschreiber withdrew due to a muscle strain, sending Greek star Tsitsipas to the third round, where he will face 32nd seed Milos Raonic.

The three-time quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park accounted for Chilean Cristian Garin relatively easily, dispatching him 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 37 minutes.

Later on day three, the tournament lost its first top-10 seed as Tennys Sandgren took down eighth-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 7-5, setting up an all-American third round against Sam Querrey.

Cilic outlasts fiery Frenchman in five-setter

At the other end of the spectrum was the path to the third round of Marin Cilic, who spent over three-and-a-half hours on court three against Frenchman Benoit Paire before finally securing the 2-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10/3) win.

Cilic, a finalist at the 2018 Australian Open and the 2014 US Open champion, is famous for his booming serve but he was actually outdone in that area by Paire, who bashed down 30 aces to Cilic's 17 through the five sets.

The fiery Frenchman threatened to lose his cool at several points through the match and simply could not handle the power of Cilic in the fifth-set super tiebreak.

Paire won the first and third points of the tiebreak before Cilic rattled off seven straight to set up seven match points.

Paire saved one and had a bit to say about the rowdy Croatian fans in the crowd, but their man got the win straight after the change of ends with a backhand passing shot.

Next on the docket for Cilic, who has a track record as a sleeping giant at slams, is ninth seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
