Djed Spence told to reject Liverpool move amid transfer rumours

Andy Townsend has warned Nottingham Forest right-back Djed Spence not to sign for Liverpool.

The 21-year-old full-back has come to wider attention following Forest’s FA Cup run, which came to an end against Liverpool on Sunday . Despite still being on loan from Middlesbrough, Spence has been linked with moves to several Premier League clubs in recent weeks, including the Reds.

However, former Chelsea star Townsend has spoken out against the right-back potentially linking up with Jurgen Klopp’s side. Speaking on Talksport, the pundit suggested a move to Anfield would not be ideal for the defender’s development.

“He has been outstanding,” Townsend said, as relayed by HITC . “During that Cup run, he was absolutely fantastic. He looks like a player of real promise.

“However, I don’t think anyone should go to a club knowing you are going to go there and going to sit and you are going to wait. If he goes to Liverpool, those two positions (right-back and left-back) are incredibly strong at that club.”

Spence first came to prominence during Forest’s 1-0 win over Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, where he captured the headlines with an eye-catching performance at right-wingback. As part of Steve Cooper’s side, he has scored three and assisted five, including an impressive finish against Leicester in the subsequent cup tie.

If Liverpool were interested in making a move for Spence, it could solve a complicated squad issue for the Reds . The imperious form of Trent Alexander-Arnold this season has left Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with limited chances to rotate, alongside the lack of a genuine back-up to the 23-year-old.

Joe Gomez filled in at right-back against Forest at the weekend, as has James Milner on occasion, while Neco Williams is currently enjoying regular first team football, on loan at Fulham.
