The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Magic System: Premier Gaou
It’s probably the most popular African song of all time. This Ivorian group cuts across borders and generations – I seriously owe these fellas a drink or five.
The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Dizzee Rascal: I Luv U
I’m married to Afrobeats, but grime was my childhood sweetheart. Growing up in east London it was grime 24/7. Pirate radio was our realm and Dizzee was the king.
The track that got me out of bed this morning
Kwamz & Flava: Takeover
Upbeat and in your face with an encouraging message to take over the world! If this one doesn’t get you out of bed in the morning somebody better call an ambulance.
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Mr Eazi ft Efya: Skin Tight
This was released last year but will go down as a classic African love song. It’s the ultimate singalong right now. Even the macho man in the corner with his triple shot of brandy and bulging biceps is singing to this one.
The track I wish I’d signed to my label
Maleek Berry ft WizKid: The Matter
If I had a label I would have been on top of this before anyone else could get their pens and paper out. It was a classic when it dropped in 2013 and still sounds fresh today. You don’t have to be an Afrobeats head to appreciate this one.
The track I’d play at my funeral
Sarkodie ft Castro: Adonai (Remix)
This song is about those who doubted you in life, rapped by one of Africa’s biggest lyricists, Sarkodie. Castro tops it off with one of the most emotional verses I’ve ever heard, as he pours his heart out praising God. It’s been a while since I’ve been to church – I think I need to go
