Helder Aragao, better known as DJ Dolores, is one of the more ebullient all-rounders of the Brazilian music scene. He played a key role in the mangue bit movement in his home city of Recife, collaborating with the great Chico Science, and has worked as a graphic designer, TV producer, composer for film and theatre, and of course a DJ. His latest set, inspired by cinema, is a colourful, widescreen affair that continues his experiments in mixing influences from Brazil’s north-east with electronics and clattering percussion. He combines violins and brass with a stomping bass line on Abertura, uses rumbling electronica to create the soundtrack for an imaginary spaghetti Western on the playful Polka do Cu, matches accordion phrases with dub effects on Satie Dub, and creates a furious, clanking wash of sound on the best track, Mulher Rendeira. It’s patchy, but exuberant and enormous fun.
